About EIGHT EM

The founder story behind EIGHT EM — why we started asking a different question about textured hair, and where the science led us.

Why does my hair look so good wet — and why is keeping it that way so much work?

Fresh out of the shower, my curls were everything I wanted them to be — hydrated, elongated, defined, black and juicy.

I loved my hair exactly as it was.

Then it would start to dry. The shape changed. The hydrated look and feel faded. The shrinkage came. Maintaining what I loved became a process of layering products, manipulating my hair, and trying to hold on to something that had been there naturally just minutes before.

That never made sense to me.

What changes between wet and dry — and why?

I wasn't trying to make my hair look like someone else's. I wasn't trying to change my texture.

I kept coming back to a much simpler question: why can't I preserve more of what I already love about my curls?

That question eventually became a scientific one.

The Science

The Architecture of the Hair Surface

As we learned more about the architecture of the hair fiber, we became fascinated by the surface of the hair — and particularly by 18-MEA, a naturally occurring fatty acid associated with the hair surface's hydrophobic character and surface properties.

That discovery changed the way we thought about haircare. It's also where our name comes from: EIGHT EM is a quiet nod to 18-MEA, the concept that sent us looking at hair surface science in the first place.

01

Hair Surface Architecture

Textured hair isn't a problem to correct — it's a structure to understand. We formulate around the surface of the fiber itself, not against it.

02

Surface Lipids

Naturally occurring lipids on the hair surface play a role in how hair holds moisture and reflects light. We formulate with that role in mind.

03

Hydrophobic Character

The surface's relationship to water shapes everything from shine to frizz. Understanding it — not fighting it — is where our formulas start.

04

Hydration & Film Formation

Hydration first, then a flexible film designed to help preserve it — instead of a heavy layer that just sits on top.

The Practical Outcome of a Question

01

Hydrate + Prime

Hydration Primer · 4 fl oz / 120 mL

Designed to prepare freshly washed curls with lightweight hydration and slip before styling.

  • Lightweight hydration
  • Slip + distribution
  • Prepares hair for Step 02
  • Designed for clean layering

02

72H — Lock + Define

Flexible Hold Styling Gel · 8 fl oz / 240 mL

Designed to create flexible definition while helping curls maintain shape and movement through wear.

  • Flexible hold
  • Curl definition
  • Movement without a rigid cast
  • Designed to layer directly over Step 01

Not maximum hold. Not maximum hydration. Balance — because that's what the original question was always about.

We don't want our hair to become something else.

We just want us to be us.
